graphite and gouache on tracing paper
24" by 36"
This drawing is an "exterior portrait" of my friend, an attempt to "sculpt" her authentically through her environment—a home where I found profound refuge. My conceptual approach explores how memory shapes our perception of space. I aimed for a translucent quality, as if the image "grows" on the paper, making the material integral to the piece; it's a physical "sculpture," not a digital rendering.
I believe our mental coding flattens visual information into concepts and symbols. To reflect this, objects are drawn structurally with uniform line weight. The shifting perspectives—from my direct experiences to involuntary aerial views—reveal our internal cognitive maps. The process itself forces remembrance, awakening the powerful emotions embedded in these memories and underscoring the significance of such deeply felt experiences.
